Curriculum Prep to G6
St Thomas More’s Catholic School is welcoming and inclusive, a place where we believe all students have the opportunity to strive to their full potential and become the people God created them to be through opportunities of hearing, acting on and bearing witness to the Gospel message.
Teachers at St Thomas More’s utilise a number of age-relevant pedagogies in their teaching. These include the Gradual Release of Responsibility instructional framework, inquiry-based learning, active and experiential learning. Authentic and reflective assessment is part of the teaching and learning cycle that informs student achievement and future teaching and learning. We ensure that all practices are evidenced-based with learning and student success as our focus.
Students are in multi-age class groups with a core class teacher who teaches a number of learning areas. We have specialist teachers in PE, The Arts and Japanese which enhance students’ learning experiences.
Our school curriculum incorporates the eight key learning areas as outlined by ACARA (Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority).
Prep - Year 6
- Humanities and Social Sciences - History, Geography, Civics & Citizenship (Yr3 - Yr6), Economics & Business (Yr5 - Yr6)
- The Arts - Visual Art, Drama, Music, Media, Dance
- Technologies - Digital Technologies, Design and Technologies
- Health and Physical Education
- Languages - Japanese
As a Catholic School, we include a ninth learning area: Religion. The Religious Education Curriculum, Good New For Living, is outlined by Catholic Education Tasmania. It is central to the faith development and Catholic understandings for our students and staff. We enhance this program through MJR, Godly Play and liturgical opportunities.
With St Thomas More, a scholar in his day as our example, we live our mission of pursuing academic excellence through being life-long learners, without neglecting the whole person, their spirit and personal wellbeing, allowing our students to grow in faith, becoming disciples of Jesus Christ.
